The origin of ultra-high strength concrete UHPC

The construction industry has achieved advanced developments through the application of ultra-high-performance concrete technology (UHPC). Intensive research efforts focused on the construction to produce an astonishing quality level of strength greater than 150 MPa and high durability that had never been thought of before. Using this technology, structures beyond what is typically designed can be built, but its use in construction is limited because it is not commercially feasible to replace conventional concrete in most applications. This is attributed to high material costs, lack of availability, limited design specifications, and complex fabrication and curing techniques. This article reviews the evolution of UHPC and proposals to replace its expensive composites with cementitious materials. However, the quality of concrete made from these alternative materials is not the same as standard UHPC. Another more promising option, which seems more practical and easier to promote UHPC technology in buildings, is approaching. It is based on UHPC combined with other building materials, utilizing UHPC in hybrid structures. This composite structure, which has the advantage of combining materials, is expected to reduce production costs. Therefore, it is recommended that this option continue to be investigated, which will increase the potential for UHPC to become more accepted in many different construction applications.


Historically, concrete has been used in construction since Roman times. Roman concrete consisted of aggregates such as rock, bricks, or tiles, with gypsum and quicklime as binding materials, and volcanic dust called pozzolan to resist salt water. It was used in many Roman buildings, such as the open-air Colosseum and the former Roman temple the Pantheon. Afterwards, the use of Roman materials decreased and builders relied on the use of stone and mortar.
However, modern concrete was introduced in the 19th century. It was developed extensively during the 20th century and is a major component of most buildings and construction operations. It has become one of the most commonly used materials in construction. By the beginning of this century, astonishingly advanced developments in concrete had been achieved through the application of ultra-high performance concrete technology (UHPC for short). This new technology enables astonishing levels of quality never thought possible before. The main significance of this article is to: represent all important components and properties of ultra-high performance concrete; highlight the application of UHPC in construction; and introduce the field of designing structures using UHPC alone or UHPC with other building materials that are environmentally friendly and cost-effective Lower and more durable. The breakdown structure includes three basic headings: Modern Concrete and UHPC Evolution; Complementary Materials for Enhancing UHPC in Construction; and General Applications and Mixed Utilization of UHPC in Construction.
